Bond Information — How to Get Someone Released

After arrest and booking, a magistrate judge sets bond. In Louisiana, bond is typically set within 48–72 hours of arrest (often sooner in Orleans Parish). Here’s how the process works:

🔍

Step 1: Verify Bond Amount

Search the inmate on opso.us/inmate/inmate.php or call (504) 827-6777. Bond amount appears with each charge. Check the Magistrate Court List for upcoming appearances.

💡

Step 2: Choose Bond Method

Cash bond (pay full amount — refundable), bail bondsman (pay ~12% non-refundable premium in Louisiana), or surety bond through a licensed company.

🏦

Step 3: Post the Bond

Bonds are posted at the Orleans Justice Center, 2800 Perdido Street. Licensed bail bondsmen can also handle the entire process. Bring valid ID and the inmate’s folder number.

Step 4: Wait for Release

Processing takes several hours after bond is posted. Weekends and holidays may take longer.

💡 Louisiana Bond Tip: In Louisiana, bail bondsmen typically charge 12% of the bond amount (non-refundable). For a $10,000 bond, you’d pay $1,200 to a bondsman. If you can pay the full amount in cash, it’s refundable after the case concludes. Some bondsmen accept payment plans — shop around and verify they are licensed in Orleans Parish.

Orleans Parish Jail Visitation — Registration & Rules

Visiting someone at Orleans Parish Jail requires pre-registration and inmate approval. The process is different from many other jails — read carefully.

How to Get Approved for Visitation

  1. The inmate must request you first. The incarcerated person must add your name to their visitation request list from inside the facility.
  2. Complete the online registration form at opso.gov — Detainee Visitation or opso.us — Visitation Registration. You must read and accept all visitation rules before proceeding.
  3. Wait for approval. You’ll be notified by email or phone about your application status. The inmate must approve you as a visitor before the application can proceed.
  4. Once approved, schedule your visit according to the facility’s available time slots.

Visitation Rules (Strictly Enforced)

  • 👥Maximum 3 visitors with active status on an inmate’s visitation list at any time
  • 🪪Valid, unexpired photo ID required every visit (driver’s license, state ID, passport, military ID)
  • 🚫No cameras, video equipment, or cell phones past the metal detectors or in the visiting room
  • 🚫No food or drink may be brought in (exception: a bottle for a small child)
  • 🚭OPSO is a non-smoking facility — no tobacco, matches, or lighters past the metal detectors
  • 🚫No intoxicated or impaired visitors — you will be denied entry
  • 👶Children must stay with parents at all times. Parents unable to control their children will be asked to leave — no exceptions.
  • 🔍All visitors and possessions screened — failure to clear metal detector = visit denied
  • 📞All inmate calls are recorded and may be monitored

Dress Code (Strictly Enforced — Will Be Denied Entry)

  • 🚫No halter tops, half shirts, or tube tops
  • 🚫No see-through or spaghetti strap garments
  • 🚫No skirts, pants, or shorts above mid-thigh
  • 🚫No tight-fitting clothing that reveals body contour
  • 🚫No clothing exposing midriff, torso, or shoulders
  • 🚫No torn/ripped clothing exposing underwear
  • 🚫No underwear visible at any time
  • 🚫No tight-fitting Spandex of any type
  • 🚫No clothing that conceals your identity

Professional Visits (Attorneys, Bondsmen, etc.)

OPSO has professional interview rooms for attorneys, bail bondsmen, law enforcement, licensed private investigators, approved counselors, clergy, medical professionals, media, and paralegals. There is no limit to the number of professional visits an inmate may receive. Paralegals must have a letter of authorization from a verified attorney on letterhead. Professional visits are encouraged during normal business hours.

⚠️ Visitation Suspension: Violations of any visiting rule may result in suspension of privileges for a designated or indefinite period at the Warden’s discretion. Criminal prosecution is possible for illegal acts during visits. After suspension ends, you must reapply in writing to the Warden.
